Painter's in Brookhaven gets it's iconic acrobat back...

One of the striking and most fun images in a restaraunt in Suffolk has been the acrobat that hangs in perpetual mid-air in the skylight at Painters. The first sculpture was there many years but was sold last year. Most recently, the acrobat has returned made by the same artist apparently. It is a nice return as the skylight has seemed forlorn of late...

Jim's Deli in Brookhaven's Wonderful and Horrible Hungry Man...

There is a lot our family like about visiting the Empire State: Manhattan, the North Fork, The Tanger Outlets, the Aquarium in Riverhead, H & M-However, this all pales in comparison to the Mecca that is Jim's Deli; in particular, the Holy Grail of breakfast sandwiches-The Hungry Man.

This sandwich is as exotic to them as cusine from a third world country. Why? Well, they live in the South and northeastern style deli food is not something they are used to (even with all the NY transplants this kind of thing doesn't seem to have caught on).

In any event, Jim's might as well call the Hungry Man the Kitchen Sink since almost everything is in it; eggs, cheese, hash browns, ham bacon on a 10 inch hero...What is not to love?

Papa Nick's in Bellport, NY is great for stress free takeout...

Papa Nick's in Bellport remains one of Mark and Lynn's favorite take out places. Lynn loves the Margherita Ppizza (not to mention some of the specialty pizzas like the Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza and the more health Grilled Chicken and Tomato Pizza). Mark loves the magnificent salads, most of all the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken which manages to be both gut-busting and health at the same time. The restaraunt has the only cooler in Suffolk County with Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi so the place is pretty close to perfection in our book...

Bohemian Rhapsody: Tiger Lily Cafe in Port Jefferson New York

There are probably a hundred places like Tiger Lilly in NYC but on Long Island it seems to be mostly one of a kind. The cafe/restaurant employees a tough but sweet group of (mostly) women whose ropy arms, tattoos and matter of fact manner signal that despite the vegetarian fare and bohemian vibe this is a restaurant that is run as tight as a Marine mess hall.

The restaurant appears to be, on the surface at least, completely vegetarian. Not so! The other day, I had a great grilled chicken salad and Lynn had a lightly breaded crab cake that was first rate. The vegetarian fare is real stick to your ribs stuff such as the Balsamic Roasted Vegetable Wrap (Grilled zucchini, eggplant, yellow squash, onions, peppers and scallions, with fresh hummus, kalamata olives, mesclun greens and house balsamic vinaigrette) and the Falafel with the Works (Homemade falafel, fresh sliced tomato, cucumber, Romain lettuce and sprouts in a honey-wheat wrap with Tzatziki sauce or Tahini Sauce).

Recently, a back porch opened (nicknamed "Medusa's Lounge") at TL where you can dine in louche splendor out of doors. There are also special events that are held there on a regular basis (mostly live music). This is in keeping with the consistent upgrades that the restaraunt seems to be enforcing upon itself; Mark and Lynn had always liked the coffee at TL, but the food has gotten much more consistent and creative over the last year or so and the atmosphere has evolved from hippieish to something more sophisticated and mature...
